The Most Effective Study System

for existing textbook content

For Academic Libraries

Instant access to alternate treatments of a section of study materials can greatly improve quality of education by:

  • Helping with a basic understanding
  • Providing a deeper understanding
  • Improving retention
  • Transcending the course curriculum

For Public Libraries

For afterschool student patrons – they have time at the library but not at school – and continuing education patrons

  • Support for continued ed courses
  • Patron’s choice – learns what he/she sees fit to learn – for creative and open exploration of a subject

Instant Access to Alternate Sources

Academic Libraries

Instant access to Open Educational Resources (OER) provides alternate treatments of textbook content for first-time learners of subjects such as history, biology, microbiology, political science, economics, mathematics and physics. For upper division & grad students, instant access to OER can provide instant reference/review materials. And as vast academic library print collections become available digitally to students studying in the library (in compliance with ©-Law), this study tool will provide instant access to a tremendous amount of scholarly content that is closely related to materials being studied.

Public Libraries

Student patrons can increase the efficiency and efficacy of their study time. With only 5 minutes between classes, students don’t even have the few minutes it takes to setup for studying with this study enhancing tool, but they have plenty of time after school at their public library. By scanning the current and upcoming chapters of their textbooks into this system on their phone, tablet or PC, or onto a USB drive that they can use with a patron-use PC in the library, students have instant access to high quality Open Educational Resources on subjects such as history, biology, microbiology, political science, economics, mathematics and physics. In addition to eliminating the need to always carry their textbooks around, having instant access to alter- nate treatments of study materials has the benefits listed on the side of this page under ‘For Academic Libraries.’

For many working adults that are continuing their education, the public library is the most convenient place to access such a study enhancing system.
Offering this system at the public library can be at nearly zero cost to the library. This study tool is part of a system that has multiple additional purposes for public library patrons. It is also a research tool. Also, it is the easiest and most effective way for individuals and families to record their personal and family histories. It even has an option for replacing patron use copiers, at an additional cost of $199 to $898.
NEW LIBRARY TECHNOLOGY

An Amazing NEW Research Tool

...too effective to be limited to university libraries

Swipe To Research!

KIC Study System automatically finds all keywords in the material you scan, searches over a billion sources and presents the closest match to the PDF your source material within seconds. This Powerful digital-age research tool allows users to research faster and more thoroughly than ever before.

swipe to research

Imagine frequently seeing your university’s researchers at the library, even more often than before the digital age. Like IA-based discovery tools, this amazing new research tool goes far beyond regular full-text search, yet unlike AI, it does not take the control away from the user.

Researchers input their digital and printed research into your existing KIC systems, then discard irrelevant content and output it to MyDocs on their phone, tablet or PC, then activate HotLinks 2D Full-text SearchMATCH Discovery to instantly SearchMATCH and find the most relevant content from HotLink’s massive infobase of open access journal articles, currently about 10 million and growing fast. Note also that your library’s most popular and valuable print content can be easily added using your KIC systems, and while in the library, your researchers can view the full content, in compliance with US copyright law Title 17, Section 109(c) – Public Display (after First Sale).

MyDocs

DLSG has been working diligently for several years on many new enhancements to our KIC systems. One very important enhancement is an Android® / Apple® app for KIC called MyDocs. MyDocs is great for managing important documents but can be especially valuable for students as a tool for managing study materials captured by KIC.

Recently, as we approached completion of MyDocs, we added some very special features to it, two study tools that work wonderfully with its ReadAlong Audio feature. Together, these features form a study system that dramatically increases study efficiency while significantly increasing study effectiveness.

KIC Study System

Most students who try KIC Study System immediately see its benefits. Those that have convenient access to a KIC scanning system begin using it regularly.

1Skim

While it is not great for longterm retention, speed reading is a great way to skim a textbook chapter before studying deeply using ReadAlong Audio. MyDocs’ speed reading tool works instantly without training.

2Read Along Audio

Everyone knows that retention is higher when the reader is able to listen to text while reading it. MyDocs ReadAlong Audio tool is so easy to use, and is perhaps the most powerful of the 3 study tools that make up the KIC Study System. However, the sequence of skimming study material for 30-120 seconds, then using ReadAlong Audio at a slower and thorough pace, and finishing with flashcards made during the Read Along Audio session forms an extremely powerful study system that often cuts study time in half.

3Flashcards

Another great tool for learning is flash cards. The KIC/MyDocs version of Flash Cards lets students quickly and easily make flash cards directly from information from their textbooks, course materials from their instructors, and monographs and serials in the library. Making flash cards in MyDocs from textbook content is like highlighting text while studying, only better – flash cards are interactive and highlighting is not. Since the flash cards are only for the student’s personal use, they can usually be created without typing.

KIC Study System Example

Let’s compare traditional studying to studying using these 3 study tools together. Imagine that a student looks at the next chapter for studying and estimates that it will likely take two hours of regular studying that evening. Suppose that student tries the KIC method instead. The student scans the chapter, maybe 30 pages, and sends the text and audio to MyDocs on his phone. That’s quick, just a couple of minutes.

Try the three study modes on the simulation screens below:

Skim Student spends 8 minutes skimming the chapter using MyDocs’ SKIM speed reading feature in 30 to 120 second intervals, following each SKIM interval immediately with a ReadAlong Audio interval of the content just skimmed, ...

Read Along Audio ... immediately after each skim interval, while the content is still in short term (subliminal) memory, the student reads the content again, only much more slowly, using ReadAlong Audio, pausing to make Flash Cards, spending an additional 35-40 minutes.

Additional Benefits

Features Advantages
ReadAlong Audio (3 Study Methods) Reading while listening is well know to significantly improve retention. In addition, users can use just the audio can be used, and the normal reading, without the audio can be used.
Highlighting with FlashCards (3 Study Methods) Students are able to highlight their own private digital copy without defacing a textbook that they don't own, and instead of simply highlighting important text, KSS makes flashcards that can be used for easy review, and quiz themselves on the highlighted points. Note that frequent quizzes is well know to improve retention.
SKIM (2 Study Methods) This feature can be used in two modes: 1) at high speed (e.g. 400-600 words per minute), for pre-reading a paragraph or two just prior to ReadAlong Audio, for reviewing just before a test, or for looking for some particular information that the student hasn't been able to find by searching; and 2) at normal reading speed (e.g. at 120-400 words per minute) for more comfortable reading on the small screen of a smart phone.
Study Progress Monitoring This features shows how much of the study material has been covered once, twice or more using ReadAlong Audio, Skim and the study mode of Flashcards. In addition, it shows the results of the one and multiple flashcard quizzes.
Study Dashboard This feature shows study progress summary information for each course that is in progress, allowing students to better allocate their study time between courses.
Small Smart Phone Support KSS intelligently reflows text, pictures , diagrams, etc. for surprisingly effective studying experience on small smart phones. MyDocs Personal Network can automatically transfer study materials between Phone, Tablet and PC.

KIC Study System (KSS) is part of MyDocs, the free KIC companion app. Unlike most eLearning systems, KSS works with virtually all existing study materials. MyDocs with KSS does not need an active Internet connection to operate. MyDocs with KSS supports phones, tablets and PCs, including iOS, Android and MS-Windows operating environments.

After accepting a copyright notice, KIC lets students input digital study materials via USB in seconds and digitize a chapter straight out of their textbook in one or two minutes. Once in KIC, the study materials can be output as KSS packets to the students’ phone, tablet or PC.

An Important Request

Now that KIC Study System exists and is so readily available to the students of US and Canada, each day that passes is a loss of 50 million study hours, so it is urgent to make it available to as many students as possible as soon as possible. DLSG is doing its part by offering KIC Study System at a very low cost, but DLSG needs your help to maintain such low pricing. DLSG is asking you to act quickly to learn what you must know to make an informed decision whether to use some of this budget year’s discretionary money, and add KICs to next year’s budget, or if it is time to change/update your copiers. If you see the potential, please investigate as soon as possible how KIC can provide this wonderful study system AND eliminate the need for student use copiers. Also, we kindly ask that you share information about KIC Study System with your colleagues at other colleges and universities.

Here's what students are saying about KIC Study System

Murilo A.
1st Year Med Student
KSS is amazing. I recently used KSS to study for a test in microbiology and one in biochemistry. I spent half the time studying, and I knew going into both tests that I was better prepared than usual. But the real proof is that I scored higher than usual.
mydocs-student-2
Kyle C.
10th Grade
Using KSS, I can remember what I study even though I study at double the speed. KSS lets me take less time to learn more. That seems revolutionary to me! I like to use SKIM at a pretty fast rate of 450 words per minute and then do the ReadAlong Audio at 1.5 times normal speed. Its fast, so it demands my attention and I get through the material without daydreaming. KSS helps me save a lot of time. I love it.
mydocs-student-3
Philip W.
11th Grade
KSS helps me stay focused on my study material without being boring. It’s a really great system, and I especially like ReadAlong Audio and flashcards. And KSS keeps my mind from wandering and I finish my studying much faster!
mydocs-student-4
Celia N.
1st Year Ph.D Student
I really, really, really like the SKIM and ReadAlong Audio features in KSS. I’ve been waiting for something like this that I could use for school. For SKIM, I really am pretty comfortable at 500 words per minute. I get basic ideas with SKIM before moving to ReadAlong Audio when I’m reading in more detail. During standard studying (without KSS), I would find myself losing focus, sometimes after reading just a few pages! I would zone out and either have to re-read paragraphs (multiple times) or take a break and come back to it. SKIM really helped me keep my focus.
